Basically over the summer i had to prepare to do a presentation for university, showing what type of designer i am. I HAVE NO IDEA! although I do know that i’m still learning and feel i cant say who i am if i haven’t tried everything and find out what i like doing best, also i want to learn as many skills as possible.
IDEA: Along with the talking part i’m going to do a stop motion showing that
’ I’m an UN-Finished Bad of Tricks ’ focusing on a graph shaped like a bag and every time i put something or take something out of the bag, the bar rises/falls and it shows from that im still learning / willing to learn etc and tht i dno who i am as yet when it comes to design.
format: not to sure as yet maybe drawn/collage
Since coming up for this idea to answer the brief i have changed my mind back and forth whilst discovering what i think illustration is, and it has had its points where i’ve been so stressed that i could’ve killed a toad out of frustration but i didn’t i took some kalms instead.

“What Have I Discovered?” - Speech
<s> what im going to say </s>
Before starting my research i thought to myself, ” what do you see illustration as “. I saw it as a way of visually communicating to someone, a way of putting ideas onto paper, but most of all i saw illustration as something handrawn and associated it with the image being on paper.
I started my research by looking into a variety of sources from the internet to magazines and books and later on started to look at interviews and how designers that are in the industry saw illustration.
As I was doing my research i discovered that the role of an illustrator has changed mainly due to the technology. It used to be all handrawn and if they wanted the image reproduction it would have to be done by wood engraving with is a tedious process. Because of software like photoshop and illustrator work can be manipulated more then it used to be, and due to this i think it has made the specialism more broad and you are now able to do more under the name “illustrator”.
(back of eye no.72) “Today, illustration can be any man made image virtual, physical or interactive”. i think this shows how the times have moved on.
Adrian Shaughnessy (varoom issue1 2006)
” Look through design books and magazines from the past 10 years and you’ll se examples of work that looks more like illustration than graphic design, yet the people who created it call themselves graphic designers. for many the old distinction between illustration and graphic design is redundant, they have become the same thing.
I think there is a slight difference between the to. I see graphic design as more grids, type and layout where as illustration more image based whether it being photography or handrawn sketches. The connection between the too i see also though because nowadays both graphic designers and illustrators have the skills necessary to do the jobs themselves instead of passing the work down the line to the next person. illustrations association with graphic design i think means that illustration now can get out of being something associated with a 2d format for example packaging or tshirts.
Because of the technology available now even the illustrations which may look handrawn have in some way have a digital aspect whether its scanned in or manipulated. technology as also made it easier for the work to be reproduced and quicker.
The process of drawing a sketch with pencil or by using vectors, to making it digital by scanning it in , and by having a wider range of skills has made the boundaries less clear which allows designers to be more experimental with there work.
In terms of ” What am I? ” i think im still learning, i feel there are things and processes i want to learn before i can say what i really am. i like photography, collage ,drawing all different things but dont want to label myself as yet. But for now im going to say im an unfinished bag of tricks.
